What a Symphony Can Teach Us About Family | Monday Invocation
“What if instead of [family being a thing you’re doing right or wrong], we thought of it as a process, a something we’re making together?”
Today, we return to our current series celebrating the diverse ways that families are represented and embodied within the LGBTQ+ community. At our most recent Parent & Family Summit, we were joined by pastor, musician, and ethnomusicologist SueAnn Shiah for a keynote that was as moving as it was insightful, drawing on the musicology concept of "musicking." This is the idea that music isn't just a thing, it's a process of relationships. And she asked: what if we thought about family the same way?
Through three musical concepts and scripture, SueAnn offers us a framework for families navigating faith and LGBTQ+ identity and challenges the idea that there's only one “right” way for a family to look or operate. This keynote is full of practical wisdom for anyone who loves an LGBTQ+ person and is learning how to make music together in shared space, family units, or intentional community.
