This Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion workshop centers civil resistance as a practical response to white supremacy and authoritarian politics in the United States. Rather than only “speaking truth to power,” we will ask what it means to actually wield our own power in public life—individually and collectively—amid rising racism, disinformation, and state violence.
We will look closely at how avoidance of power, nitpicking language, and getting stuck in calling out others can drain energy away from sustained resistance. Through guided reflection and story-sharing, participants will:
Name concrete experiences of racialized harm and discrimination in everyday life, work, and public institutions
Distinguish between expressing outrage and organizing effective, ongoing civil resistance
Explore where our power lives: in relationships, material resources, refusal, disruption, and cross-racial solidarity
Practice envisioning and planning small-scale, repeatable actions of civil resistance that participants can carry into their own communities
This workshop is for people who want to move beyond performative allyship or despair, toward grounded, strategic, and persistent forms of civil resistance to white supremacy in the wider world.
