6 Messages of Hope for LGBTQ+ Christian Youth

Affirming theology is not just about defending LGBTQ+ people in faith spaces, it is about celebrating, uplifting, and empowering them. Here are six messages every LGBTQ+ Christian young person needs to hear, inspired by the words of Liz Dyer from her session, “Affirming Theology for LGBTQ+ Youth.”

  1. Diversity Is a Sacred Gift

You are part of God’s beautiful, intentional diversity—your identity is not a mistake.

  2. You Are Made in God’s Image

Your existence reflects the divine; you are worthy, valuable, and beloved just as you are.

  3. God Wants You to Live as Your True Self

Living authentically is not just allowed; it’s what God desires for you.

  4. You Belong Fully in Faith Communities

Your voice, presence, and gifts are needed and are essential. As Liz Dyer says in this session, “If we don't have LGBTQ+ people participating in our faith communities, fully participating, then we're missing something.”

  5. Affirming Theology Goes Beyond Defense

Affirmation is about actively celebrating and supporting you because of who you are, not despite who you are.

  6. Your Story and Gifts Enrich Us All

LGBTQ+ people bring unique perspectives, creativity, and wisdom to the table. Your story matters, and your faith journey can inspire and strengthen the whole community.

These truths are a foundation for hope, belonging, and flourishing. Take them with you, share them, and know that your life is a vital part of God’s story.
