Becoming Light | Monday Invocation

“When there is no shortage of darkness in the world, perhaps that is our invitation to awaken the Christ within us. Christ invites us to become light for the world. Igniting the light of love in our souls is the most powerful thing we can do to interrupt the heaviness surrounding us.”

Rev. Kipp Nelson

In a world full of darkness, where do we turn?

The temptation is often to dive into the depths of social media feeds expecting that light will somehow find us there. Rarely have I ever discovered any type of light amid the doom scrolling. To experience or witness the light, we must find ways to interrupt the darkness. For me this has meant taking a step back from the screens and spending time with God and myself in nature. During this season of Lent, I have been setting aside at least one full day to unplug from social media in an effort to experience God outside of the doom and gloom coming across my screens every day.

I am learning that sometimes the best way to interrupt the darkness around us is through becoming an agent of light. In Ephesians 5:8 we read the words, “For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. So, walk as children of light.” (NRSV) This is a great reminder that when we draw near to Christ himself and follow in his ways, the divine light becomes alive in and through us. Too often we sit around waiting for the light to find us, when in fact the light is already in us.

The beauty of the Christian faith is that we believe in a God who works through human beings to bring about divine goodness. Through Christ, God reveals the light of love which persists even through evil and death. And when we follow in Christ’s example of love and humility, we too become agents of this divine light

.When there is no shortage of darkness in the world, perhaps that is our invitation to awaken the Christ within us. Christ invites us to become light for the world. Igniting the light of love in our souls is the most powerful thing we can do to interrupt the heaviness surrounding us.

This Lenten season, how might you intentionally awaken your own spirit? How might you interrupt the waves of darkness and ignite Christ’s light within you?

The light is there; it’s just waiting to be set free.
