This Too Shall Pass: African Diaspora Traditions and the Cultivation of Christianity in the United States

This Too Shall Pass invites participants to gently examine their assumptions and deepen their understanding of African diasporic traditions within the context of Christianity in the United States. Guided by the Congo Cosmogram and Paul Christopher Johnson’s diasporic arc of origin, separation, and return, this conversation offers a brief, accessible look at how these sacred systems emerged, traveled with African descended peoples, and took root in Black American life.

Together, we will explore how African diasporic wisdom shows up in practices so deeply embedded in Black Christian culture that some people do not recognize, or sometimes even deny, their origins. We will also name how anti-Blackness has distorted these traditions, casting them as “other” to uphold colonial narratives and imperial power.

Ultimately, this session is not about expertise. It is an invitation to understand these traditions as expansive sources of resilience, imagination, and spiritual grounding, offering insight not only for surviving present circumstances but for reimagining faith, embodiment, and flourishing in the future.

We hope you will join a supportive group of people who are passionate about learning the nuances of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging. Whether you’re new or seasoned, we hope you’ll find a home here with us. This gathering welcomes LGBTQ+ people and allies. Sign up today!
