Weconnect retreat

LU_WeConnect_All4_IG (2).png

The WeConnect Retreat is back! For the seventh year in a row, Q Christian is proud to provide a retreat for conference attendees who are female identified. If you are non-binary or Gender non-conforming and would feel at home in such an affinity space, you are always fully welcome!

For this years retreat, we are excited to be partnering with She Is Called, a national group of women committed to fostering discussions about passion and calling.

The afternoon will consist of a facilitated series of conversations around the words “Identity” and “Calling.” We’ll consider what these words mean for female identified, non-binary and gender non-conforming LGBTQ+ Christians. The retreat will also feature an artistic experience to integrate the discussion topics.

We’re also excited to announce that this year we will be presenting the 2019 Mother Eagle Award to the Rev. Nancy Wilson, former moderator of the Metropolitan Community Church and lifelong advocate of equality for LGBTQ+ people. The Mother Eagle Award was established in 2017 to honor the women who have taken the lead in courageously advocating for LGBTQ+ equality in Christianity. Its purpose is to express gratitude and to ensure their stories are known and their sacrifices remembered. The annual award is jointly presented by Christian Feminism Today and Q Christian Fellowship. Register today and stay tuned for more details!

11:30AM - 2:30PM - MICHIGAN 1A - Register here

This event is open to anyone who identifies as being outside the gender binary. We will start with a social time of getting to know each other over a small lunch, and move into a discussion about identity development and awareness.

Leading the retreat is Laura Beth (Taylor) Buchleiter, an author and advocate for LGBTQ people faith communities. With over 25 years of work in conservative Christian contexts prior to coming out as a transgender woman, she has first-hand experience with the challenges of being accepted.

Laura Beth is an alumnus of The Reformation Project Leadership Development Cohort (2016) and a frequent guest at PFLAG and other support group meetings.

For the final hour, we will open the doors to our friends and allies as we welcome Mark Wingfield, associate pastor of Wilshire Baptist Church, in Dallas, TX to talk about his journey toward understanding of the transgender community. Mark currently serves as a board member and columnist for Baptist News Global and on the Missions Council of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. In November 2016, he was invited to give a TED Talk at TEDxCharlottesville about his journey toward acceptance of transgender people. All are welcome to the last hour of the retreat.

1:00PM - 2:30PM - GRAND E/F

Join us for one of the first screenings of the new documentary Stories of Intersex and Faith. Every year in the United States, thousands of needless surgeries are performed on children even though the United Nations has called some of these procedures “torture.” Our anxieties about sex and gender, often rooted in religion, have lead us to hide, shame, and harm healthy intersex children. Caught in the cross-hairs of the culture wars, intersex people can even find themselves marginalized within LGBTQ+ communities.

Fighting for the end of non-consensual surgeries, legal protections, informed medical care, and inclusion, five courageous intersex people come out of the shadows to share their stories of faith, doubt, trauma, resilience, and courage. They insist, “It’s society that needs to be healed, not us.”
