Our Mission: Crucial Now, More Than Ever

At the annual Board-staff retreat in July, we reviewed GCN's mission statement. Our current mission statement, adopted in 2014, consists of both our mission and our vision:

Guided by the light and love of Christ, the Gay Christian Network is transforming attitudes toward LGBTQ people across denominations and cultures. We equip churches, educate lay people, build supportive communities, influence key thought leaders, foster self-acceptance, and advocate on behalf of the marginalized and oppressed. (Our MISSION)

Together, we are creating a world where the next generation of LGBTQ youth will grow up fully loved and embraced by their families, churches, and neighbors; and where Christians worldwide will live up to their calling as instruments of grace and defenders of the outcasts. (Our VISION)

This is a complex mission, with many components. We were challenged during the retreat to think about how we would prioritize the different parts of the mission statement when resources are limited. After a healthy discussion, we unanimously reaffirmed our commitment to the mission statement in its entirety.

First and foremost, we care about fostering self acceptance and building safe communities. But we also remain committed to equipping churches, educating lay people, influencing key thought leaders, and advocating on behalf of the marginalized and oppressed.

In light of the Nashville statement, these priorities seem even more critical. It is clear that we have yet to achieve our vision of a world where LGBTQ youth grow up fully loved and embraced by their families, churches, and neighbors. Too many of our LGBTQ brothers and sisters still find themselves feeling alone in churches which are anything but safe, where the message is one of shame and unworthiness rather than acceptance and abundant love.

GCN's mission statement still resonates with us. If it still resonates with you, won't you join us in this life-saving work? Donate, register for the Denver conference, sign up to volunteer, and be a part of the change we all want to see in our world.
